Bubba We Ballin' or Fallin, Year 2 Struggles
Is Jayden Daniels worth drafting ahead of last year's fantasy QB elite?
What is worse to be called: "bubba" or "big guy"? I would give a slight lean to "big guy," but would prefer neither.
Which leads me to the big guy of the week Jayden Daniels. Right now he's getting drafted at QB3 on Underdog bestball drafts, ahead of Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, and Patrick Mahomes. Last week he was QB4 behind Jalen Hurts. So for me, I am passing on Jayden Daniels—the ADP is just too rich for my liking.
A year ago we were ready to crown CJ Stroud an MVP candidate, and he added Stefon Diggs as a pass catcher. I'm just warning you to temper your expectations because the Commanders haven't even picked another pass catcher for Daniels. I don’t think he can jump Lamar Jackson in ADP, but who knows what happens after they make that WR FA signing. You don’t have to believes in the "sophomore slump." But I do, I know his rushing upside helps him, but I am not reaching on a second year QB.
Some notable names that suffered from the sophomore slump:
Vince Young (2007) – After winning Rookie of the Year, Young regressed in his second season, throwing 9 TDs to 17 INTs.
Sam Bradford (2011) – The 2010 Offensive Rookie of the Year regressed in his second season, struggling with accuracy and health.
Robert Griffin III (2013) – After winning Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012, RGIII struggled in his second season due to injuries and inconsistent play.
Jameis Winston (2016) – Despite solid stats, Winston's turnover issues intensified in Year 2, raising concerns about his long-term potential.
Justin Herbert (2021) – While not a dramatic slump, Herbert's second year saw minor dips in efficiency and decision-making under pressure.
C.J. Stroud (2024) – After an MVP-caliber rookie season, Stroud has shown early signs of a sophomore slump, with defenses adjusting, leading to fewer explosive plays and increased turnovers.
So where does this leave us with Daniels? Are you willing to bet your fantasy season that he'll be the exception rather than the rule? If you're IN on Daniels, you're probably looking at spending a late 3rd/early 4th round pick – right now going QB3, ADP 38.4 on Underdog Fantasy.
